There are certainly things that let you know you're old. Hearing Steve Wright In The Afternoon call a song by Pulp a "golden oldie". When your earnings get better but your back ache gets worse and you hit the point where if you drop something you think about buying a new one instead of bending to pick it up. And, of course, mirrors.
Now added to that list is this. "Stone Roses hero Mani collects antique silver cutlery". The icons I once rocked out to are now enjoying the kind of things your gran would buy in a gift shop.
I remember the days when rock stars would collect spoons but to go with their collection of cigarette lighters and heroin they'd been working on.
A source revealed Mani turned to fine culture after the birth of his twin sons two years ago, saying, "He's the absolute doting dad and their arrival completely turned his head about how life should be lived." That's OK then, he's gone soft because he wants a better world for his kids - that I can understand, but why he thinks spoons are the thing his kids will need I'll never fathom.
Don't get me wrong, I live by the motto "you can never have enough teaspoons" – when I listen to Alanis Morissette singing, "It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife" I think, "Brilliant. You can go for ages without doing the washing up and still have a cuppa." Mani's fine diningware is too posh to use though. That's pointless. Things in the kitchen should be used. The only thing that should remain solely for show in a kitchen is the blender, after that first use you get out of it.
I think I know what happened. Mani had a hard life, used his musical talent to make some money and wanted his children to have the best start, and he heard about all those posh kids born with a silver spoon in their mouths. I just hope the midwife stopped him before he got in there.
